Metro de Madrid was established 94 years ago to assist the mobility of Madrilenians. Madrid then had a population of 600,000. Today Metro transports nearly two million users every day around its network of some 300 kilometres and its 300 stations, thanks to which mobility in the Community of Madrid is convenient, safe and fast. The Madrid Underground reaches twelve municipalities in the region and around 80 per cent of the regional population have a Metro station within 600 metres of their home.
The purpose pursued by Metro is that of being a sustainable means of transport in a triple aspect: economic, social and environmental. Metro de Madrid looks after the social dimension of sustainability by means of the development of an excellent service in terms of quality, safety, efficiency and accessibility. This helps to reduce surface traffic congestion, atmospheric pollution and environmental noise, which considerably enhances the quality of life of residents.
It is one of the longest-standing Underground systems in the world. Nevertheless, it is one of the leading benchmarks in the area of innovation thanks, amongst other reasons, to the innovative efforts of its engineering department, which, together with its lengthy experience in design, development, commissioning and operation, have led to Metro de Madrid being adopted on a widespread basis as an international benchmark, so that at the present time and in recent years it has grown beyond our frontiers and has major business opportunities as its services are in great demand from abroad .
