So as to promote Spain as a shopping destination for tourists, on 14th December Turespaña organised a prestigious event in Dubai for tour operators, travel agencies, consultants and the specialised press. The event was supported by the FMRE and the Office of the High Commissioner for the Spain Brand and took place in the privileged setting of the gardens of the Ritz hotel.

During the event, so as to promote tourist consumption of products and services provided by Spanish brands, the Leading Brands Forum presented the catalogue ‘Spain: tourism, brands and experiences’, published in Arabic, English and Spanish, which offers a very visual and attractive display of the range of Spanish brands that can be purchased by tourists on a shopping trip. The catalogue will also be distributed both internationally and in Spain to tourists that visit our country.

Furthermore, given the role played by the United Arab Emirates and in particular by Dubai as the commercial and tourist hub of a large number of countries in the region, plus its strategic importance for Spain, this trip also enabled us to make several visits to institutions in order to strengthen ties between the two countries. The visits were carried out by the High Commissioner for the Spain Brand, the Spanish Ambassador, the Commercial Counsellor and the managing director of the FMRE, with the agenda including a meeting with the Chairman of Emirates Airlines, His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum (uncle of the Emir of Dubai, and occupying many other posts in the Emirate’s financial bodies, including that of Chairman of the steering committee for the Universal Expo in 2020). A visit was also paid to the Dubai Investment Development Agency, where they were received by the Agency’s CEO, Mr Fahad AlGerwawi.

It was also possible to take part in a meeting with the representatives of Spanish brands in the region such as banks (Santander, BBVA, Caixabank, Banco Popular), engineering and construction companies with projects in the area (INECO, TYPSA, Indra, Abengoa, Constructora San José, Sener, Técnicas Reunidas and Acciona) and Spain’s Professional Football League (from where the offices in Beijing and Johannesburg are also managed). This meeting took place at the Ofecomes (Economic and Commercial Office of the Spanish Embassy) with the Board of Directors of the Spanish Business Council, chaired by Ricardo Fisas from Natura Bissé, and shed light on the huge progress made by Spanish companies in the region, and also the difficulties they have to face.
