Qatar was the scene of the Contract Group’s first international activity at the Brands Forum. Appointed as the Football World Cup host for 2022, despite the stagnation of oil prices in 2016, Qatar’s economy is expected to take off again from mid 2017 and is expected to be one of the countries with the fastest economic growth in the coming years.

Apart from the oil industry, Qatar is one of the Gulf states with the greatest dynamism in building activity, for the residential sector and for infrastructural work as well as the construction of sites for the manufacturing sector.

In tourism, the government is supporting the development of this industry and has promoted a large number of property and hotel developments in Doha, working with leading construction companies from around the world. A large number of project currently are underway which the government values at 1 billion dollars.

In fact, construction represented 5.6% of GDP in 2014. It is estimated that around 2,500 companies operate in the sector, employing more than 160,000.

For all these reasons it was decided that this would be the ideal setting for this commercial and networking activity; it took place together with ICEX through the support of their Finance and Trade Office in Dubai and their attaché in Qatar.

The Spanish delegation consisted of some of the key Spanish brands on the contract channel, such as: Auditel, Arco, BRS Imaginarea, Keraben, Egi, Fama, Fermax and Roca.

The programme took place on 12 and 13 December and was strongly focused on achieving business, market knowledge and creating key contacts. The full schedule included theory sessions by agents with long-term presence in the country, meetings and interviews with companies and potential clients, as well as visits to current construction sites to see the key developments underway in the country first hand.
